While 1.5 billion people traveled around the world in 2019, it is estimated that an increase of 4 percent is expected in 2020. The contribution of online channels to this increase in the number of travelers is increasing day by day. The fact that the online travel market has reached 590 billion dollars worldwide shows the size of the market, and it is predicted that the industry will exceed 800 billion dollars in 2020.
In Turkey with a population of 82 million, 59 million people actively use the Internet. While only 34 percent of people buy products or services online in 2019, this rate is over 70 percent in EU countries.
A significant portion of tourism companies’ income comes from online sales. According to statistics, 30-35% of the e-commerce market in Turkey consists of travel expenses.
At this point, the use of Social Media in the hospitality sector gains importance. According to my impressions, unfortunately, most of the companies in the tourism sector in Turkey still do not favor the use of social media.
Some Problems in the Industry
- Potential Customers make reservations with online brokers and agents (OTAs). The rates of reservations made from the websites of the hotels are quite low. It is necessary to attract guests to the website. Online platforms attract people because they advertise too often.
- Commissions are given to online platforms. This brings us to the issue of website pulling.
- Different prices appear on each portal because each portal has a different commission fee.
- The difficulty of getting a direct reservation from the website of the hotel or company
- Changing political, economic values and geopolitical risks. Unfortunately, these issues affect the tourism sector the most.
- High competitiveness

- Events held in hotels attract the attention of guests.
- Guests should be encouraged to come back. After their visit, a discount code can be given to their mail that they can use for their next reservation.
